Bordeira Beach - Aljezur Algarve

The name of the beach derives from the fact that the Ribeira da Bordeira flows into the sea at the southern end of this large expanse of sand. There are ruins of an ancient fortress built in the 17th century as protection against the pirates that were active all along the coast. Close to this beach is a small headland, known as Pontal, from where there is a magnificent view over the beach's rock formations. Close by is a structure of fossil reefs from the Mesozoic era, which is of great palaeontological importance. The beach is easily reached by a wooden footbridge over the stream.

How to get there

In Carrapateira (when heading in a North-South direction), there is a turning to the right along a tarmac road leading to the beach of Bordeira (roughly 2.5 kilometres). The easiest access to the beach is from the southern end, by the car park, which is not paved with tarmac. From there you can walk down to the beach across a wooden footbridge.
