There are ruins of an ancient fortress built in the 17th century as protection against the pirates that were active all along the coast. Close to this beach is a small headland, known as Pontal, from where there is a magnificent view over the beach's rock formations. Close by is a structure of fossil reefs from the Mesozoic era, which is of great palaeontological importance. The beach is easily reached by a wooden footbridge over the stream.

How to get there

In Carrapateira (when heading in a North-South direction), there is a turning to the right along a tarmac road leading to the beach of Bordeira (roughly 2.5 kilometres). The easiest access to the beach is from the southern end, by the car park, which is not paved with tarmac. From there you can walk down to the beach across a wooden footbridge.

During your holiday don't forget to visit the most famous and important highlights of the Algarve .Beginning with the Algarve 's capital, located at the sea side Faro, is surrounded by the Ria Formosa, a nature reserve of 17.00 hectares and stopping place for migrating birds. It forms a kind of bay and is therefore the beach in this municipality that is least affected by the breaking of waves. At the southern end of the beach, there is a narrow conical and pointed rock standing upright that has the appearance of a giant statue and has been given the name of Pedra da Agulha (The Needle). Outside the summer bathing season, this beach is very popular amongst surfers and bodyboarders. Close to the ruins of the Fortaleza da Arrifana, a fortress built by the Moors, there is a beautiful panoramic view over the Costa Vicentina. The beach is easily reached via a ramp and some wooden steps.

How to get there

Access is via a tarmac road running from Aljezur to the beach (roughly 9 kilometres). The eternal natural beauty of the Ria de Alvor. The charm of cultivated fields, of slopes covered with pine trees and wild flowers. The allure of walking up into the hills and looking down on the Algarve from a new perspective.
Narrow streets of the old fishermen and tradesmen quarter. Some aspects that identify the character of this city, old of many centuries. The presence of the sea, the immense beach known by the name of Praia da Rocha.

Portimão is one of the main big game centres in the Algarve, offering the chance to catch fighting swordfish and other big fish. There are also facilities for sailing, windsurfing, parasailing, water-skiing and scuba diving. The golf course set among the pines of Penina is internationally renowned. With courses at Alvor and Vau too, keen golfers are spoilt for choice. Fortress of St. Catherine of Ribamar Along with the fort of St. John of Arade, across the water in Ferragudo, this fortification constituted Portimão's defences against raiding corsairs and pirates.Built in the 17th/18th centuries in an excellent strategic position, it affords splendid views of the sea, river, beaches and cliffs. A great place to be at sunset. Inside is an old chapel dedicated to St. Catherine of Alexandria.

Portimão Area

Alvor

This town's long history is clear from the discovery on Vila Velha hill, overlooking the Ria de Alvor, of a Neolithic village retaining traces of subsequent Roman occupation. During the period of Moorish rule, Alvor was a thriving port. Alvor retains much of the charm of a picturesque fishing village, with streets of white houses and colourful boats which, after a day at sea, congregate around the old fishing market.

Abicada

A Roman archaeological site at the confluence of two rivers. There is a 1st/4th century villa with several rooms and a peristyle decorated with coloured mosaics bearing geometric patterns and stylised designs.

Alcalar

An important Neolithic/Chacolithic burial ground (2,000/1,600 B.C) with graves of several types, from megalithic chambers to tombs with false cupolas and side alcoves. There is another burial ground nearby at Monte Canelas.

Mexilhoeira Grande

An old village traditionally sustained by agriculture and by the resources of the Ria de Alvor.

The Ria de Alvor

To one side the sea, to the other the liquid mirror of the vast estuary stretching inland, and between them a long, broad dune. This beautiful setting is the chosen nesting place of dozens of species of migratory bird. The salt marshes also support an interesting variety of animal life, while the local fishermen still use traditional techniques to catch fish and gather shellfish. To explore this almost unknown facet of the Algarve by the diffuse light of dawn is to discover a world of total calm and make memories that will last forever. (Boats can be hired at Alvor).

The Arade Estuary

For thousands of years, Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, Moors, Normans and Crusaders sailed up the river towards the city of Silves, intent on trade or conquest. Visitors today can take the same course in a boat hired from Portimão. The shady groves along the banks make good places to stop off and relax, as does the island of Nossa Senhora do Rosário (Our Lady of the Rosary), where the ruins of an old chapel are still to be seen.

Sun and SeaPraia da Rocha

May be the most famous resort in the area, but the beaches that extend all the way to Alvor have their own particular appeal. Fine golden sands as far as the eye can see. Calm turquoise waters. Ochre cliffs and rocks sculpted into fantastical shapes. Such is the natural beauty of Praia da Rocha, a place which inspires visitors today as it has always done. Discovered by tourism at the end of the 19th century, it was for decades the favoured resort of well-to-do families from Portimão, the Algarve and Andalusia in summer, and of the English in winter. The Hotel da Bela Vista, with its Belle Époque architecture and decoration, dates from this period. In the 50s and 60s Praia da Rocha began to draw an increasingly international clientele and these days it is a cosmopolitan tourism centre and a byword throughout Europe for sun, sea and sand.

Vau

A charming beach flanked by cliffs. Its charming atmosphere, iodine-rich waters and fascinating rock formations make it popular with families.

João de Arens

A small stretch of sand set among cliffs, rocks and islands, it is associated with a fearless shepherd immortalised by the writer Manuel Teixeira Gomes, a native of Portimão, in his book "Blue August".

Tres lrmãos and Prainha

A series of tiny beaches separated by outcrops of ochre rock in which the sea has worn tunnels that offer an unusual means of access.

Alvor

A long beach that extends as far as the eye can see, until it reaches the Ria de Alvor estuary. The streets are arranges on a grid pattern, as stiff and straight as soldiers on parade, leading off from a broad, open square. The façades of the houses repeat the balanced forms of a sober and restrained architectural style. Vila Real de Santo António is a perfect example of ideals of The Enlightment of the 18th century put into practice. The town's formality contrasts with the gentle landscapes along the banks of the Guadiana where, here and there, esplanades provide oases of cool and welcome relief from the heat of the sun.

To appreciate the harmony of Vila Real de Santo António's ordered layout, there is no substitute for walking through its streets. The best place to start is the Praça Marquês de Pombal at the heart of the town, where the stone pavement radiates out from the obelisk erected in 1776. This square contains three of the town's most important 18th century buildings: the church, the town hall and the former guardhouse. After that it is worth walking around a few of the blocks, which were built by private individuals, but which stick to the same unifying architectural formula. The route ends with the line of façades of Avenida da República, which is delimited by two towers and contains the former customs house, with its broad gateway and triangular pediment. Nearby, there are gardens on the banks of the Guadiana and across the river, the Spanish town Ayamonte.

Flowing between hills bright with colours of wild flowers and the green of cork oaks and pine, the Guadiana River has for centuries marked the frontier between Portugal and Spain. From Vila Real de Santo António boat trips run regularly up the river and provide an opportunity to become acquainted with a different Algarve. Among the sights to be seen are villages of whitewashed houses that seem to spill down the slopes to the water's edge and the thousand-year old castle at Alcoutim proudly standing guard over the river.

Sea and Sun

Monte Gordo

For centuries fishermen's shacks were the only sign of human life on the broad sands surrounded by pinewoods. The beauty of the beach and the warm, safe waters attracted the first foreign tourists in the 60s, making Monte Gordo something of a pioneer in the development of tourism in the Algarve. Today it is an international tourist destination and counts a casino among its more urbane attractions.

Santo António

A lighthouse marks the location of this calm family beach, with its long sweep of sand. While the coast is marked by high cliffs beneath which huddle sandy coves and pristine dunes, the hinterland is a place of rolling hills covered with vegetation that recede, row upon row, as far as the eye can see. Between the two extends a broad strip of fertile fields and valleys where the traditional crops of vegetables, sweet potatoes and peanuts are still grown. Time spent in Aljezur municipality is thus an opportunity to rediscover peace and tranquillity, to experience a silence broken only by the singing of birds or the crash of waves on the rocks and to savour the beauty of verdant fields, gentle slopes swathed in wild flowers and majestic cliffs with the pounding sea as backdrop.

At the top of the hill, the castle ramparts, symbol of the long struggle between Christians and Moors. A cascade of white houses that almost tumble down the hillside towards the river. Facets of Aljezur, a town, centuries old, that found in the plain that it faces a route to growth and a future.

In the streets that wind down the slope from the top of the hill crowned by the castle are houses typical of the coral architecture of the Algarve, with the colourful borders painted around windows and along the edges of immaculate whitewashed walls. At the base of the hill is the Fonte das Mentiras (literally the Fountain of Lies), which is associated with the legend of a beautiful Moorish woman and the conquest of the castle.

Sun and Sea

The sea has carved tall cliffs from the schist hills along the coast where birds nest and wild flowers grow. Here and there, in bays that face the sun and the ocean, are long beaches of dark sand.

Odeceixe

Has a long beach, cut in two by the mouth of the Seixe creek. The resort is calm and family-oriented with facilities for visitors. There are impressive views of the sea from the Miradouro da Ponta Branca.

Quebrada

Is a narrow beach squeezed between the sea and the cliffs. Little visited.

Samouqueira, Vale dos Homens and Carriagem

Quiet, little frequented beaches.

Amoreira e Monte Clérigo

These two beaches lie next to each other, separated by rocks. There are facilities for visitors. The coast is punctuated by fascinating rock formations, ending at Ponta da Atalaia, which means Lookout Point.

Arrifana

Along stretch of sand sheltered by cliffs with a picturesque fishing port, Arrifana is linked to the historical figure of the Moorish prince and poet Ibn Caci (12th century) who lived here as a recluse. There are ruins of an old fort (17th century) built to defend the tuna fishermen and their gear. At the end of the cliffs Pedra da Agulha (literally Needle Rock) rises majestically from the sea.

Penedo, Vale Figueiras and Canal

Beaches of great beauty that see few visitors.

Bordeira and Amado Long beaches.

In Bordeira stand the ruins of a former defensive fort built to repel pirate attacks (17th century). Near to Amado the so-called Pedra do Cavaleiro (Knight's Rock) stands amid the waves. Between the two beaches lies the rock formation of Pontal, surrounded by bays and high cliffs.

Sports

The whole of the coast of Aljezur municipality is a paradise for sports anglers who dream of landing big fish. The waters here teem with sea bass, dory, conger, eels, snook, sea bream and many other species of fish. Bata dos Tiros, Samouqueira, Esteveira, Vale dos Homens, Carriagem, Pipa, Fonte Santa, Atalaia, Canal, Vale Figueiras, Bordeira, Pontal and Amado are among the most famous fishing grounds. The perfectly-formed waves that break off Aljezur's beaches are among the best in Europe and ideal for surfers and body-boarders alike.

Gastronomy

With the sea so close at hand, there is no shortage of fresh fish, to be enjoyed grilled over an open fire or cooked in tasty stews called "caldeiradas". Seafood of various kinds is also to be had. One interesting local speciality are "perceves", a kind of barnacle which grows on the rocks along the shoreline. Sweet potato, grown in the fertile valleys where water is plentiful, is a recurring ingredient in the region's typical dishes and cakes which can be accompanied by the full-bodied wine grown on the terraced slopes or by aguardente de medronho, the arbutus-berry liqueur distilled in copper stills in the hills of the interior.

Handicraft

Craftsmen and women still make typical basketware and pretty wooden spoons reminiscent of the rural life in days gone by. Of the old tradition of reedmace chairs, once found in every home, all that remains are the exquisite miniatures made by two local artisans. The women of Aljezur continue to make lace coverlets and cloths to age-old patterns. Pottery is a craft that is enjoying a strong revival and some local ceramicists produce work of a very high standard.

During your holiday don't forget to visit the most famous and important highlights of the Algarve .Beginning with the Algarve 's capital, located at the sea side Faro, is surrounded by the Ria Formosa, a nature reserve of 17.00 hectares and stopping place for migrating birds. A walk through the steep streets of the town Centre is rewarded with views of magnificent hills, glimpsed between houses, and moments of sunlit calm in unsuspected corners. It leaves a memory of a hill town with a history and character all of its own and instils a strong desire to return.

Historical Centre

The houses of Monchique display many of the traditional features of Algarvean architecture - white walls, carved stonework, bands of colour around doors and windows - but their "saia" (literally "skirt") chimneys are quite distinct from those found on the coast. The narrow streets that wind up the steep hillside, revealing fresh views of verdant hills at every turn, lend the town a certain exoticism to which camellias, hydrangeas and fruit trees add a fragrant suggestion of gardens and orchards. An opportunity to discover a facet of the Algarve unlike any other. To appreciate fully how pretty Monchique is, head for the Largo de São Sebastião. The white houses look as if they are perched on steps carved into the hillside, amid a fairy tale setting of bright flowers and cool, green trees.

Municipality of Monchique

Caldas de Monchique

The Romans built impressive baths on the site now occupied by thermal facilities dedicated to treating rheumatism and chronic respiratory illnesses and the springs have been put to therapeutic use ever since. A pretty square shaded by trees and flanked by attractive buildings dating from the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries epitomises the calm and relaxing atmosphere of Caldas de Monchique. It's worth visiting the little glazed pavilion where the fountain plat's and the chapel of Santa Teresa (St. Theresa), which contains a series of 18th century tiled panels telling the story of the saint's life. The biggest attraction of Caldas de Monchique is however the extensive wooded park that rises up the hillside. Dappled patterns of light and shade, a softly murmuring river and trees that are hundreds of years old make the perfect backdrop for a gentle stroll or a picnic at the stone tables provided.

Alferce

This charming village is made up of houses built in the style typical of the Algarvean countryside. The medieval origins of the village church are evident in its ogival porch, its triumphal arch and the ribbed vault in its main chapel. Nearby, on Cerro do Castelo, stand the ruins of a fortification with concentric walls that was probably built by the Romans.

Marmelete

The low white houses of the Algarvean hills stand out from a palette. of warm browns and ochres. The bucolic country chapel of Santo Antonio (St. Anthony) stands on a small elevation and affords fine views of the surrounding countryside.

Monchique Hills

Foia, which at 902 metres is the highest point in the Algarve. From there the view stretches away on one side as far as Cape St. Vincent and north to the Serra da Arrábida, near Lisbon, and on the other to Faro and a vast semi circle of hills.Picota is 774 metres high, but steeper, and has broad and perhaps even more beautiful views that take in a long sweep of the Algarve and Ithe sea.Such viewpoints make a good starting point for an exploration of this region of steep massifs cut through with valleys and ravines, of rivers and springs where all year round cold water bubbles clear over stone.

The temperature and rainfall of the Monchique hills are those of a subtropical maritime mountain type climate, which is why exotic plants like yams thrive here. The serra is like a marvellous botanical garden, with more than 1,000 plant species, for many of which it constitutes the southwest European limit.Despite forest fires and huge plantations of pine and eucalyptus, patches of oak, cork, oak, chestnut and arbutusberry tree still persist, along with hundreds of types of colourful wildflowers, turning the hills into a paradise for amateur botanists. There is plenty for birdwatchers to see too. Among the dozens of species to he found are storks, goshawks, roundwinged, royal and mottled eagles, wild pigeons, doves, water hens, kingfishers, cuckoos, owls, nightingales, bluecaps and wrens.

Flavours of the Serra de Monchique

Dishes made with rice and beans or chestnuts are not to be missed. Equally tasty are the many recipes based on pork, which also finds its way into a wide variety of delicious home made sausages and blood sausages, including "farinheiras" and "mólhos". Another local delicacy is the ham cured using methods centuries old its smoky, nutty flavour is unforgettable.Honey is an ingredient common to nearly all the cakes and desserts of the Monchique region: "bolo de tacho" and honey pudding. The nectar gleaned from the many different types of wild flower makes a fragrant, complex honey that has long had a reputation for quality. Indeed bees have been kept commercially since the 16th century. At the end of a meal nothing goes down like a glass of "medronho", the heady spirit made in copper stills from the fruits of the arbutus tree, or a sip of "melosa", a mixture of brandy and honey.

A Land of Crafts

The craftsmen and women of Monchique still make wicker baskets, wooden spoons, knives and other kitchenware, cloths and other linen items as their predecessors did for generations before them. Scissor chairs, so called because of the way they fold shut, are possibly an invention left behind by the Romans, and are to be found in all sizes. Modern craft trends are reflected in dried flower arrangements, tapestry pictures and sculptures made of tree branches.

During your holiday don't forget to visit the most famous and important highlights of the Algarve .Beginning with the Algarve 's capital, located at the sea side Faro, is surrounded by the Ria Formosa, a nature reserve of 17.00 hectares and stopping place for migrating birds. Later came the Romans to enjoy the pleasures of this coastline and to leave their own testimonies to their presence and culture. The Roman Ruins of Milreu, in Estói, the Roman Villa of Cerro da Vila, in Vilamoura, or the settlement at Alcalar are all examples of this period. Now, they come equipped with visitor information centres to ensure a broader and fuller understanding of just how the Romans lived in the Algarve. The Algarve is also home to a rich Islamic heritage, with influences to be found across various dimensions of the region's culture. This includes some of the castles and fortresses, as well as a number of churches converted from their previous function as mosques. There is also a strong Islamic influence to be noted in popular architectural styles.Vila Real de Santo António represents the region's very best example of the huge legacy left by the Marquês de Pombal as he set about rebuilding much of Portugal following the 1755 earthquake. Indeed, the entire architectural richness of this sun-blessed region derives from the multitude of references that may be encountered by those prepared to venture a little beyond the immediate beauty of the coastline.

During your holiday don't forget to visit the most famous and important highlights of the Algarve .Beginning with the Algarve 's capital, located at the sea side Faro, is surrounded by the Ria Formosa, a nature reserve of 17.00 hectares and stopping place for migrating birds. Simultaneously rich in flavours but unpretentious in preparation, the Algarve cuisine reflects both roots set deep in realities long since gone and a diverse set of influences, as is the case with so much of this region's heritage.

In a land of fishermen residing on the fringes of the Atlantic, fish and shellfish have always played a leading role in the kitchen. In many cases, the best recipes are those of fishermen who, over the centuries, have perfected the best means of sealing in all the natural flavour - ever so slow charcoal grilling. But yet there is much more. There are many recipes in which the best of the sea's produce is cooked along with herbs, spices and other ingredients. The most famous is Clams cooked in the Cataplana, a copper utensil. Islamic in origin, the Cataplana is particularly effective in preserving delicate flavours.

However, the influences have come from all over. The inland region has also contributed to the Algarve cuisine with some wonderful recipes based on the local agriculture, wild herbs and plants, and the meats culled from the hillside pastureland.
Now internationally famous, the cakes and desserts are the sweetest of delights! There is no holding out against the divinely produced specialities featuring their lavish dash of sugar and eggs in addition to the almonds, figs, oranges or carobs grown across the Algarve.
And, to accompany all this, there is the famous distilled spirit known as "Aguardente de Medronho", many fruit liqueurs and some fine regional wines.
This is the richest of legacies and one well cared for at any one of the many restaurants or traditional tasquinhas dotted across the region.

During your holiday don't forget to visit the most famous and important highlights of the Algarve .Beginning with the Algarve 's capital, located at the sea side Faro, is surrounded by the Ria Formosa, a nature reserve of 17.00 hectares and stopping place for migrating birds. This has led the modern Algarve to retain very special characteristics that run throughout its people's way of life. These special features are expressed in such distinct fields as Architecture (with the original chimneys standing out), Music or Gastronomy. Many such traditions have survived the ages and form a major attraction for visitors to the region. From the handicrafts, especially rich osier weaving and painted ceramics, to the very special way in which festivals are celebrated, you will find the rich heritage of a progressive region, which the local inhabitants take great pleasure in sharing with their visitors.
A particular attraction has proved to be the local music, heard throughout the region. From hotels to restaurants, from festivals to traditional celebrations, the typical Algarve dancing and singing celebrations, whose particular highlight is the "corridinho" folk dance, delight everybody with their infectious rhythm and pace.
As would naturally be expected, some of the Algarve's best traditions come directly from the sea. Take, for example, all the depth of the traditions to be found amongst the communities engaged in fishing and the gathering of shellfish.
Traditions that still convey their vibrancy to the delight of all visitors!

During your holiday don't forget to visit the most famous and important highlights of the Algarve .Beginning with the Algarve 's capital, located at the sea side Faro, is surrounded by the Ria Formosa, a nature reserve of 17.00 hectares and stopping place for migrating birds. Its 88,550 sq. km (34,200 sq. miles) cover almost one seventh of the Iberian Peninsular. In reality, its Atlantic position provides a much cooler climate, particularly in the north where a refreshing amount of rain falls during winter. Influenced by the Gulf Stream and the isobars circulating around North Africa, the climate in Portugal is simultaneously Atlantic and Mediterranean.

Portugal's strength as a holiday destination is its diversity, a something-for-everyone kind of place with mountains, vast arid plains, sub-tropical volcanic islands and lush-green meadows, not forgetting 528 miles of sandy beaches. Rich in cultural traditions and history it is one of the oldest nations in Europe, an ideal country with lovely beach resorts offering the opportunity for a pleasant and restful break at any time of the year.

Portugal is a fast-growing destination for golfers who can now choose from more than forty top-class courses including San Lorenzo, in the Algarve, officially recognised as one of Europe's best championship courses. Most other sporting activities are freely available in Portugal, such as, surfing, windsurfing, water-skiing, jet-skiing, fishing, sailing, swimming, mountain biking, rambling, horse-riding, hunting, bird-watching, skiing, tennis, cycling, etc...

Portugal - the last real old place in Europe - is a country of outstanding natural beauty, scattered with medieval towns and historic castles and palaces.

PORTUGAL GASTRONOMY

Portuguese food is distinctive and varied, featuring many regional specialities that have evolved from local traditions and ingredients.
Much of Portuguese cooking is spice based, thanks largely to Vasco da Gama and the other navigators of his time. He and his seafaring countrymen traversed the globe collecting pepper, cloves, curry, nutmeg, cinnamon, and a range of savoury foods which serve as the base of many dishes today. Fish is a mainstay of Portuguese cuisine, particularly sardines and the ever-present dried codfish. Portuguese meat is both tasty and safe to eat, particularly pork which for centuries has been an important livestock in the country's rural economy. The annual slaughter between December and Easter is still a major event in the winter calendar of most farms and villages. In the Bairrada region north of Coimbra, many restaurants specialise in roast sucking pig. Some parts of the pig in feijoada, a bean stew made with black pudding and pork knuckle.

PORTUGAL LEISURE

Despite its size, Portugal offers a great variety of terrain, with a wide range of sports and leisure activities to match. Golf and tennis facilities have been well established for many years, and in the south the mild climate means that both sports can be enjoyed all year round. In the Algarve, most of the courts in tourist complexes are hard-surfaced, although elsewhere many are clay. The larger resorts in the Algarve, Madeira and the Estoril Coast & Sintra region offer tennis coaching holidays.

Portugal’s resorts are also famous for their golf courses, which include some of Europe’s finest. The majority offer coaching for golfers of all abilities and specialist holidays are now easy to arrange. Surfing, windsurfing and sailing are extremely popular along Portugal’s 800 kilometres of coastline and around the Atlantic islands of Madeira and the Azores. The best beach for surfing is the world-famous Guincho, just outside Cascais in the Estoril Coast, where international championships are often held. Also in the Algarve, the modern marinas at Lagos, Albufeira and Vilamoura are important yachting centres.

PORTUGAL CURRENCY

Portugal currency is the euro. You can exchange money at banks, which are open from 8.30 a.m. to 3 p.m. five working days a week; at bureaux de change; and at automatic currency exchange machines (these are for currency sale transactions only).
In Portugal, the most commonly used credit cards are: Visa, Visa Electron, American Express, Diners Club, Europay / MasterCard, JCB and Maestro.

DRIVING IN PORTUGAL

Vehicles drive on the right in Portugal. Unless otherwise indicated, vehicles coming from the right have priority in squares and at intersections.
At junctions with roundabouts, vehicles already on the roundabout have right of way.
Road signs comply with international rules.
It is illegal to drive with a blood alcohol level of 0.5 grams per litre or more.
All occupants must wear seat belts.

PORTUGAL TELEPHONES

In public telephone booths, coins and special cards can be used. They are sold in Portugal Telecom shops, post offices and some kiosks and news-stands (with a sign indicating this).

All telephone numbers in Portugal are composed of nine digits. To call from abroad to Portugal, it is necessary to dial the international access code 00 and the country code 351. To call abroad from Portugal, dial 00, the country code, the area code and then the number wanted. The dialling codes of the various countries are affixed in public telephone booths.

During your holiday don't forget to visit the most famous and important highlights of the Algarve .Beginning with the Algarve 's capital, located at the sea side Faro, is surrounded by the Ria Formosa, a nature reserve of 17.00 hectares and stopping place for migrating birds. The city has always been ready to welcome new visitors and to bid a fond farewell to those departing, something that was never truer than when saying goodbye to sailors at the time of the great Portuguese maritime discoveries.

This is why there are many important Manueline monuments shining in the light of Lisbon and its surrounding region, such as the Torre de Belém and the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos. The modern leisure area of the Parque das Nações proves that Lisbon still maintains its close links with the river today. Here, for example, you will find the distinctive mark of Álvaro Siza Vieira on one of the buildings that hosted the last world exposition of the 20th century, dedicated to the theme of the oceans. In contrast to this, do not miss the picturesque mediaeval quarters of Alfama and Mouraria, above which stands the castle. This castle, matched by Bairro Alto on the other hill, leads down to the downtown city centre known as the Baixa Pombalina.

Lisbon is also at the centre of a region rich in diversity. Just outside the city are the seaside resort of Estoril and the romantic hills of the Serra de Sintra, where the perfect bond between palaces and nature led to the area being classified as a world heritage site.

It is the sea, the climate and the stunning nature that give this region its peculiar energy. Its many parks and nature reserves encourage visitors to spend time in the open air, enjoying the peace and quiet of a round of golf or the adrenaline buzz of surfing. Perhaps this is why Lisbon is a city that is full of life. Here people have an exuberant party spirit, doing things spontaneously for the sheer pleasure of spending time in the company of others.

LISBON LIFESTYLE

Begin with the pleasures of the table, by enjoying some of the very best fish and seafood dishes. It’s quite likely that you’ll be invited to taste one of the regional sweets or desserts, or one of the delicious nectars that are produced here - the region has four special wine routes, with such famous wines as Bucelas, Colares, Quinta da Bacalhoa or Periquita. In many places, you have special pedestrian areas where you can walk and soak up the atmosphere or just simply shop in comfort. You’ll be won over by the charms of Cascais, Sintra, Óbidos, Caldas da Rainha and Santarém, that’s if you don’t want to travel too far from the capital. In all of these towns, you’ll find excellent shops, selling everything from the major international brands to the most traditional local handicraft. And don’t forget: there are all kinds of cultural events on offer. Concerts, ballet, theatre, or just a trip to a bar or a discotheque, are amongst some of the different possibilities. There are also the many ancient traditions that are still very much preserved, such as the festivities held in honour of the local patron saints in June. But, of course, you can just simply enjoy sitting on the terrace of an outdoor café. We know that you’ve enjoyed the region’s great beauty, and we’re just as certain that our suggestions have also been to your liking. Try a glass of moscatel wine from Setubal and end your trip in the best possible way.

LISBON FADO

Fado is, by its very nature, the song of Lisbon. It was taken to the four corners of the world by the famous diva Amália Rodrigues, considered the best ever exponent of a very Lusitanian soulful yearning.

Inspired by a very personal sentiment, a soul that is felt but not explainable, Fado remains the most noble and genuine expression of popular Portuguese culture. And given this very special nature, Fado is always a surprise for visitors to Lisbon. Fado is fado and cannot be otherwise categorised. It is the music that issues forth from the Portuguese soul.

In the amateur fado houses, which again thrive in fado’s spiritual home of Alfama and other traditional neighbourhoods such as Bairro Alto, the fado singer is never invited; he or she makes her own invitation. Similarly, there is no pre-set line up. A grilled smoked sausage is served to accompany a few glasses of wine before the lights go down and the magic of such gatherings bursts forth.

JUNE: THE SAINTS PARTY IN LISBON

June 13th is St. Anthony’s day and the 29th to St. Peter - three great excuses for coming to see how we celebrate saints’ days in Portugal.
Saints’ days are full of fun and merriment. The streets are decorated with balloons and arches made out of brightly-coloured paper; people dance in the city’s small squares, and altars, dedicated to the saints, are put up as a way of asking for good fortune. In Avenida da Liberdade, there are the Marchas, a parade of the inhabitants from the city’s different traditional quarters. There are hundreds of singers and dancers and a vast audience applauds their favourite participants.

Meanwhile if you are attracted to someone, declare yourself to them in the heat of the festivities and offer them a manjerico (a flower-pot with a sweet basil plant) and a love poem.

During your holiday don't forget to visit the most famous and important highlights of the Algarve .Beginning with the Algarve 's capital, located at the sea side Faro, is surrounded by the Ria Formosa, a nature reserve of 17.00 hectares and stopping place for migrating birds. The cove offers shelter to traditional fishing boats, decorated with bright naïve paintings. Cliffs of ochre stone, worn into tracery, line the turquoise sea as far as the Cape. On the way stands the hermitage, the work of man, whilst the strange vaulted grotto of Algar Seco echoes like a Cathedral carved by the wind and the sea.

CARVOEIRO GOLF

Two magnificent Golf courses and the David Leadbetter Golf Academy in addition to a wide range of luxury golfing properties, either for sales or rentals.

Gramacho Golf Course:

The Gramacho Course is unique with 27 greens being the only one of its type of design on the continent of Europe; it is one of only a few courses in the world with 18 sets of tees and 27 greens but only 18 fairways. This original golf layout was designed by Ron Fream of Golplan USA and the famous Nick Price. The use of existing features of the land, outcrops of rock, dry stone walls, fig, almond, carob and olive trees, have been augmented by well positioned bunkers and lakes. These hazards, combined with the shaping of the fairways and greens, have produced a wonderful array of challenging but fair golf holes. The designers have combined the hilly picturesque course with the artistic fairways and used the ancient olive trees, some 600 years old, all over the courses.

Pinta Golf Course:

Design by Ronald Fream of Golfplan USA, opened for play in 1992 and has justly earned a reputation for its excellent condition and its ability to challenge golfers of all standards. The Bermuda grass fairways and Penn Cross Bent greens are protected by well positioned sand bunkers and two ornamented lakes, which are play on four holes. The undulating terrain is liberally dotted with carob, fig, almond and olive trees, some of which are more than 600 years old.
David Leadbetter Golf Academy: Located in the heart of the Pinta Course, is a mayor attraction for many golfers. Tuition takes place on the two purpose-built fairways with six target greens and special chipping, bunker and putting areas.

During your holiday don't forget to visit the most famous and important highlights of the Algarve .Beginning with the Algarve 's capital, located at the sea side Faro, is surrounded by the Ria Formosa, a nature reserve of 17.00 hectares and stopping place for migrating birds. This is a place where people live to the rhythm of the great holiday destinations, sunbathing during the day and at sunset flocking to enjoy the restaurants, bars and discotheques that enliven the night time hours.

Located in the centre of the Algarve in Portugal’s southernmost region, Albufeira is acknowledged as one of the main tourist regions of the country.

The cliff-lined coast is punctuated with beaches of a Mediterranean climate. The summers are hot and the winters are mild with limited rainfall mainly between the months of October through March, giving an average yearly temperature of 17.5ºC. The coast of Albufeira is an invitation for water sports: sailing, water skiing, windsurfing, scuba diving. The Albufeira Golf Courses almost reach the sea; so, when you want to make a birdie you cannot forget that the golden soft sand waits for your tiresome body, wagering for the sun warmth.

ALBUFEIRA GASTRONOMY

Gastronomic pleasures in Albufeira begin with the fresh fish and shellfish that the fishermen bring in from the sea every day. Who can resist grilled sardine, dory or sea bass? Or fresh lobster caught in the rocks? Those who enjoy traditional cooking can choose from among a wide range of typical fishermen's recipes. There is nothing better than a fish or shellfish "cataplana" cooked in the hinged copper vessels that are a feature of any Algarvian kitchen. From the farmers of the hinterland come dishes of corn flour with pork and sausages, young horse mackerel, chicken casseroled with its giblets and shoulder of lamb roast with almonds, honey and rosemary for an unforgettable flavour. To round off a meal, choose from almond balls, almond nougat, almond cake or fig cake, a very sweet local delicacy.

ALBUFEIRA HANDICRAFT

Many of the traditional crafts of the Algarve are to be found in Albufeira. Local craftsmen and women continue to make palm and rush work items, objects in copper and tin, baskets, lace and typical footwear, as they have done for centuries. More recent in origin, but equally creative, are the painted textiles and tapestries produced, which are often decorated with regional motifs.

ALBUFEIRA BEACHES

Galé: An expanse of sand that stretches for miles between cliffs. It is equipped with a wide variety of tourist facilities. The course wind through an immense pine forest - dotted also with fig, oak and almond trees - and is the work of Englishman Donald Steel. The result is a test of the golfers' strategic skills. The narrow fairways demand accurate driving, various lake and bunker hazards are always in play, and the greens are fast. To card a good round hinges on conquering the first four holes, considered the hardest on the course.

Vilamoura Old Course: This is the oldest Vilamoura golf course which form part of a luxury tourist resort complex close to the magnificent beaches and the Vilamoura Marina. Course designer Frank Pennink wanted to create a course in the Algarve what would remind players of the beautiful and challenging British parkland courses. Opened in 1969, the verdant fairways run through surrounding pine trees, adding an extra challenge. In 1997, the course benefited significantly from a costly renovation. It is a very attractive and extraordinarily well maintained course, boasting a great variety of holes, a new irrigation system and personalised service. The par 3 holes, all different and visually stunning, represent the toughest challenge on the course. They demand perfect iron selection and near-perfect shot control. Trees play a crucial role, punishing careless shots and lining the dog-legs.

Pinhal Golf Course: Opened in 1976, Pinhal Golf Course was designed by Briton Frank Pennink. Later, in 1985, it was partly redesigned by the acclaimed North American architect Robert Trent Jones, who sought to add to the difficulty of the course. His work has given the course a great variety of holes as he brought together two completely different architectural concepts: British and North American. As a result, the golfer faces very different types of shot. Built in the middle of a beautiful pine wood, with panoramic views over the sea, the course requires highly precise approach shots. The 17th, 502m par 5 from the championship tee, is a good birdie (or even eagle) chance for those who risk driving off over the out-of-bounds area to the right, thereby dramatically cutting through the pronounced dog-leg fairway.

Vilamoura Laguna Course: Lying close to the spectacular Algarve coastline and the Vilamoura marina, Vilamoura Laguna Golf Course represents an enduring challenge to the player due to the constant presence of water. Designed by Joseph Lee, the course takes full advantage of the wet, marshy ground near the sea and presents a rather different layout from the other three Vilamoura courses. Here the golfer can drive off more confidently, because of the greater fairway width and less vegetation. On the course, besides the bunkers, water is a near-constant hazard. And although visually intimidating, the hurdles are not insurmountable, given that the course is not particularly long.

Vilamoura Millennium Course: A combination of a remodelled nine holes from the Laguna course, together with nine newly built holes, to form the Millennium Course - opened on May 13th, 2000. The course is particularly open, although some holes (the 3rd to the 7th) wind between pine trees and are similar to the neighbouring fairways of the Old Course and Pinhal. In this more wooded area, the fairways are narrower and require greater accuracy - while the rest of the course has a clear landscape enriched by lakes at the 4th, 17th and 18th holes. The 'tiger tees' (four different tees for each hole) raise the challenge and competitiveness of the course, but the wide fairways and greens ensure that the Millennium is an enjoyable course for all levels. The arrival of the Millennium Course makes Vilamoura one of the main - if not the main - European golf destinations.

During your holiday don't forget to visit the most famous and important highlights of the Algarve .Beginning with the Algarve 's capital, located at the sea side Faro, is surrounded by the Ria Formosa, a nature reserve of 17.00 hectares and stopping place for migrating birds.
