Aljezur

ALJEZUR

The boundaries of Aljezur municipality mark out a broad rectangle delimited by the sea and the hills, and its landscapes reflect this dual influence.

While the coast is marked by high cliffs beneath which huddle sandy coves and pristine dunes, the hinterland is a place of rolling hills covered with vegetation that recede, row upon row, as far as the eye can see. Between the two extends a broad strip of fertile fields and valleys where the traditional crops of vegetables, sweet potatoes and peanuts are still grown.

Time spent in Aljezur municipality is thus an opportunity to rediscover peace and tranquillity, to experience a silence broken only by the singing of birds or the crash of waves on the rocks and to savour the beauty of verdant fields, gentle slopes swathed in wild flowers and majestic cliffs with the pounding sea as backdrop.

Portimão

A rich heritage of historical monuments. The eternal natural beauty of the Ria de Alvor. The charm of cultivated fields, of slopes covered with pine trees and wild flowers. The allure of walking up into the hills and looking down on the Algarve from a new perspective.
Narrow streets of the old fishermen and tradesmen quarter. Some aspects that identify the character of this city, old of many centuries. The presence of the sea, the immense beach known by the name of Praia da Rocha.

Portimão is one of the main big game centres in the Algarve, offering the chance to catch fighting swordfish and other big fish. There are also facilities for sailing, windsurfing, parasailing, water-skiing and scuba diving. The golf course set among the pines of Penina is internationally renowned. With courses at Alvor and Vau too, keen golfers are spoilt for choice. Fortress of St. Catherine of Ribamar Along with the fort of St. John of Arade, across the water in Ferragudo, this fortification constituted Portimão's defences against raiding corsairs and pirates.Built in the 17th/18th centuries in an excellent strategic position, it affords splendid views of the sea, river, beaches and cliffs. A great place to be at sunset. Inside is an old chapel dedicated to St. Catherine of Alexandria.

Portimão Area

Alvor

This town's long history is clear from the discovery on Vila Velha hill, overlooking the Ria de Alvor, of a Neolithic village retaining traces of subsequent Roman occupation. During the period of Moorish rule, Alvor was a thriving port. Alvor retains much of the charm of a picturesque fishing village, with streets of white houses and colourful boats which, after a day at sea, congregate around the old fishing market.

Abicada

A Roman archaeological site at the confluence of two rivers. There is a 1st/4th century villa with several rooms and a peristyle decorated with coloured mosaics bearing geometric patterns and stylised designs.

Alcalar

An important Neolithic/Chacolithic burial ground (2,000/1,600 B.C) with graves of several types, from megalithic chambers to tombs with false cupolas and side alcoves. There is another burial ground nearby at Monte Canelas.

Mexilhoeira Grande

An old village traditionally sustained by agriculture and by the resources of the Ria de Alvor.

The Ria de Alvor

To one side the sea, to the other the liquid mirror of the vast estuary stretching inland, and between them a long, broad dune. This beautiful setting is the chosen nesting place of dozens of species of migratory bird. The salt marshes also support an interesting variety of animal life, while the local fishermen still use traditional techniques to catch fish and gather shellfish. To explore this almost unknown facet of the Algarve by the diffuse light of dawn is to discover a world of total calm and make memories that will last forever. (Boats can be hired at Alvor).

The Arade Estuary

For thousands of years, Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, Moors, Normans and Crusaders sailed up the river towards the city of Silves, intent on trade or conquest. Visitors today can take the same course in a boat hired from Portimão. The shady groves along the banks make good places to stop off and relax, as does the island of Nossa Senhora do Rosário (Our Lady of the Rosary), where the ruins of an old chapel are still to be seen.

Sun and SeaPraia da Rocha

May be the most famous resort in the area, but the beaches that extend all the way to Alvor have their own particular appeal. Fine golden sands as far as the eye can see. Calm turquoise waters. Ochre cliffs and rocks sculpted into fantastical shapes. Such is the natural beauty of Praia da Rocha, a place which inspires visitors today as it has always done. Discovered by tourism at the end of the 19th century, it was for decades the favoured resort of well-to-do families from Portimão, the Algarve and Andalusia in summer, and of the English in winter. The Hotel da Bela Vista, with its Belle Époque architecture and decoration, dates from this period. In the 50s and 60s Praia da Rocha began to draw an increasingly international clientele and these days it is a cosmopolitan tourism centre and a byword throughout Europe for sun, sea and sand.

Vau

A charming beach flanked by cliffs. Its charming atmosphere, iodine-rich waters and fascinating rock formations make it popular with families.

João de Arens

A small stretch of sand set among cliffs, rocks and islands, it is associated with a fearless shepherd immortalised by the writer Manuel Teixeira Gomes, a native of Portimão, in his book "Blue August".

Tres lrmãos and Prainha

A series of tiny beaches separated by outcrops of ochre rock in which the sea has worn tunnels that offer an unusual means of access.

Alvor

A long beach that extends as far as the eye can see, until it reaches the Ria de Alvor estuary. An international tourism centre.

Vila Real de Stº António

In the town centre stands an obelisk, a vertical symbol of the power of the king and his prime minister. The streets are arranges on a grid pattern, as stiff and straight as soldiers on parade, leading off from a broad, open square. The façades of the houses repeat the balanced forms of a sober and restrained architectural style. Vila Real de Santo António is a perfect example of ideals of The Enlightment of the 18th century put into practice. The town's formality contrasts with the gentle landscapes along the banks of the Guadiana where, here and there, esplanades provide oases of cool and welcome relief from the heat of the sun.

To appreciate the harmony of Vila Real de Santo António's ordered layout, there is no substitute for walking through its streets. The best place to start is the Praça Marquês de Pombal at the heart of the town, where the stone pavement radiates out from the obelisk erected in 1776. This square contains three of the town's most important 18th century buildings: the church, the town hall and the former guardhouse. After that it is worth walking around a few of the blocks, which were built by private individuals, but which stick to the same unifying architectural formula. The route ends with the line of façades of Avenida da República, which is delimited by two towers and contains the former customs house, with its broad gateway and triangular pediment. Nearby, there are gardens on the banks of the Guadiana and across the river, the Spanish town Ayamonte.

Flowing between hills bright with colours of wild flowers and the green of cork oaks and pine, the Guadiana River has for centuries marked the frontier between Portugal and Spain. From Vila Real de Santo António boat trips run regularly up the river and provide an opportunity to become acquainted with a different Algarve. Among the sights to be seen are villages of whitewashed houses that seem to spill down the slopes to the water's edge and the thousand-year old castle at Alcoutim proudly standing guard over the river.

Sea and Sun

Monte Gordo

For centuries fishermen's shacks were the only sign of human life on the broad sands surrounded by pinewoods. The beauty of the beach and the warm, safe waters attracted the first foreign tourists in the 60s, making Monte Gordo something of a pioneer in the development of tourism in the Algarve. Today it is an international tourist destination and counts a casino among its more urbane attractions.

Santo António

A lighthouse marks the location of this calm family beach, with its long sweep of sand. Support facilities.

Lota Pine-fringed sands Support facilities.

Manta Rota

This is a tourist spot that still manages to preserve something of the flavour of a fishing village. There is a long beach. Support facilities.

Fábrica

Opposite the historic town of Cacela Velha. Fishing boats ferry visitors across the creek that is part of the Ria Formosa to a sand bar that stretches away as far as the eye can see. Support facilities. The Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo António Salt Marsh Nature Reserve and the Ria Formosa Nature Park are wonderful places for birdwatchers and botanists alike. Both have visitor centres offering advice and information.

Aljezur Overview

The boundaries of Aljezur municipality mark out a broad rectangle delimited by the sea and the hills, and its landscapes reflect this dual influence. At the top of the hill, the castle ramparts, symbol of the long struggle between Christians and Moors. A cascade of white houses that almost tumble down the hillside towards the river. Facets of Aljezur, a town, centuries old, that found in the plain that it faces a route to growth and a future.

In the streets that wind down the slope from the top of the hill crowned by the castle are houses typical of the coral architecture of the Algarve, with the colourful borders painted around windows and along the edges of immaculate whitewashed walls. At the base of the hill is the Fonte das Mentiras (literally the Fountain of Lies), which is associated with the legend of a beautiful Moorish woman and the conquest of the castle.

Samouqueira, Vale dos Homens and Carriagem

These two beaches lie next to each other, separated by rocks. There are facilities for visitors. The coast is punctuated by fascinating rock formations, ending at Ponta da Atalaia, which means Lookout Point.

Arrifana

Along stretch of sand sheltered by cliffs with a picturesque fishing port, Arrifana is linked to the historical figure of the Moorish prince and poet Ibn Caci (12th century) who lived here as a recluse. There are ruins of an old fort (17th century) built to defend the tuna fishermen and their gear. At the end of the cliffs Pedra da Agulha (literally Needle Rock) rises majestically from the sea.

Penedo, Vale Figueiras and Canal

Beaches of great beauty that see few visitors.

Bordeira and Amado Long beaches.

In Bordeira stand the ruins of a former defensive fort built to repel pirate attacks (17th century). Near to Amado the so-called Pedra do Cavaleiro (Knight's Rock) stands amid the waves. Between the two beaches lies the rock formation of Pontal, surrounded by bays and high cliffs.

Sports

The whole of the coast of Aljezur municipality is a paradise for sports anglers who dream of landing big fish. The waters here teem with sea bass, dory, conger, eels, snook, sea bream and many other species of fish. Bata dos Tiros, Samouqueira, Esteveira, Vale dos Homens, Carriagem, Pipa, Fonte Santa, Atalaia, Canal, Vale Figueiras, Bordeira, Pontal and Amado are among the most famous fishing grounds. The perfectly-formed waves that break off Aljezur's beaches are among the best in Europe and ideal for surfers and body-boarders alike.

Gastronomy

With the sea so close at hand, there is no shortage of fresh fish, to be enjoyed grilled over an open fire or cooked in tasty stews called "caldeiradas". Seafood of various kinds is also to be had. One interesting local speciality are "perceves", a kind of barnacle which grows on the rocks along the shoreline. Sweet potato, grown in the fertile valleys where water is plentiful, is a recurring ingredient in the region's typical dishes and cakes which can be accompanied by the full-bodied wine grown on the terraced slopes or by aguardente de medronho, the arbutus-berry liqueur distilled in copper stills in the hills of the interior.

Handicraft

Craftsmen and women still make typical basketware and pretty wooden spoons reminiscent of the rural life in days gone by. Of the old tradition of reedmace chairs, once found in every home, all that remains are the exquisite miniatures made by two local artisans. The women of Aljezur continue to make lace coverlets and cloths to age-old patterns. Pottery is a craft that is enjoying a strong revival and some local ceramicists produce work of a very high standard.

Monchique Overview

Visiting Monchique

Monchique is best visited on foot. A walk through the steep streets of the town Centre is rewarded with views of magnificent hills, glimpsed between houses, and moments of sunlit calm in unsuspected corners. It leaves a memory of a hill town with a history and character all of its own and instils a strong desire to return.

Historical Centre

The houses of Monchique display many of the traditional features of Algarvean architecture - white walls, carved stonework, bands of colour around doors and windows - but their "saia" (literally "skirt") chimneys are quite distinct from those found on the coast. The narrow streets that wind up the steep hillside, revealing fresh views of verdant hills at every turn, lend the town a certain exoticism to which camellias, hydrangeas and fruit trees add a fragrant suggestion of gardens and orchards. An opportunity to discover a facet of the Algarve unlike any other. To appreciate fully how pretty Monchique is, head for the Largo de São Sebastião. The white houses look as if they are perched on steps carved into the hillside, amid a fairy tale setting of bright flowers and cool, green trees.

Municipality of Monchique

Caldas de Monchique

The Romans built impressive baths on the site now occupied by thermal facilities dedicated to treating rheumatism and chronic respiratory illnesses and the springs have been put to therapeutic use ever since. A pretty square shaded by trees and flanked by attractive buildings dating from the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries epitomises the calm and relaxing atmosphere of Caldas de Monchique. It's worth visiting the little glazed pavilion where the fountain plat's and the chapel of Santa Teresa (St. Theresa), which contains a series of 18th century tiled panels telling the story of the saint's life. The biggest attraction of Caldas de Monchique is however the extensive wooded park that rises up the hillside. Dappled patterns of light and shade, a softly murmuring river and trees that are hundreds of years old make the perfect backdrop for a gentle stroll or a picnic at the stone tables provided.

Alferce

This charming village is made up of houses built in the style typical of the Algarvean countryside. The medieval origins of the village church are evident in its ogival porch, its triumphal arch and the ribbed vault in its main chapel. Nearby, on Cerro do Castelo, stand the ruins of a fortification with concentric walls that was probably built by the Romans.

Marmelete

The low white houses of the Algarvean hills stand out from a palette. of warm browns and ochres. The bucolic country chapel of Santo Antonio (St. Anthony) stands on a small elevation and affords fine views of the surrounding countryside.

Monchique Hills

Foia, which at 902 metres is the highest point in the Algarve. From there the view stretches away on one side as far as Cape St. Vincent and north to the Serra da Arrábida, near Lisbon, and on the other to Faro and a vast semi circle of hills.Picota is 774 metres high, but steeper, and has broad and perhaps even more beautiful views that take in a long sweep of the Algarve and Ithe sea.Such viewpoints make a good starting point for an exploration of this region of steep massifs cut through with valleys and ravines, of rivers and springs where all year round cold water bubbles clear over stone.

The temperature and rainfall of the Monchique hills are those of a subtropical maritime mountain type climate, which is why exotic plants like yams thrive here. The serra is like a marvellous botanical garden, with more than 1,000 plant species, for many of which it constitutes the southwest European limit.Despite forest fires and huge plantations of pine and eucalyptus, patches of oak, cork, oak, chestnut and arbutusberry tree still persist, along with hundreds of types of colourful wildflowers, turning the hills into a paradise for amateur botanists. There is plenty for birdwatchers to see too. Among the dozens of species to he found are storks, goshawks, roundwinged, royal and mottled eagles, wild pigeons, doves, water hens, kingfishers, cuckoos, owls, nightingales, bluecaps and wrens.

Flavours of the Serra de Monchique

Dishes made with rice and beans or chestnuts are not to be missed. Equally tasty are the many recipes based on pork, which also finds its way into a wide variety of delicious home made sausages and blood sausages, including "farinheiras" and "mólhos". Another local delicacy is the ham cured using methods centuries old its smoky, nutty flavour is unforgettable.Honey is an ingredient common to nearly all the cakes and desserts of the Monchique region: "bolo de tacho" and honey pudding. The nectar gleaned from the many different types of wild flower makes a fragrant, complex honey that has long had a reputation for quality. Indeed bees have been kept commercially since the 16th century. At the end of a meal nothing goes down like a glass of "medronho", the heady spirit made in copper stills from the fruits of the arbutus tree, or a sip of "melosa", a mixture of brandy and honey.

A Land of Crafts

The craftsmen and women of Monchique still make wicker baskets, wooden spoons, knives and other kitchenware, cloths and other linen items as their predecessors did for generations before them. Scissor chairs, so called because of the way they fold shut, are possibly an invention left behind by the Romans, and are to be found in all sizes. Modern craft trends are reflected in dried flower arrangements, tapestry pictures and sculptures made of tree branches.

A Bitte of Algarve History...

Bearing Witness to the Past Going back to the beginning of time From the very earliest periods of history, the Algarve has been the chosen place of settlement for different peoples, resulting in many distinct and fine historical buildings that are the top priority for all those wishing to discover more about the great cultural heritage of this region. From pre-history through to the Pombaline architectural style of the 18th century, with excursions into the Roman, Arab and mediaeval periods, much evidence of these past times has survived intact.Scattered all across the entire region are the menhirs and megalithic monuments that testify to the presence of the first men to make their mark on human history. Later came the Romans to enjoy the pleasures of this coastline and to leave their own testimonies to their presence and culture. The Roman Ruins of Milreu, in Estói, the Roman Villa of Cerro da Vila, in Vilamoura, or the settlement at Alcalar are all examples of this period. Now, they come equipped with visitor information centres to ensure a broader and fuller understanding of just how the Romans lived in the Algarve. The Algarve is also home to a rich Islamic heritage, with influences to be found across various dimensions of the region's culture. This includes some of the castles and fortresses, as well as a number of churches converted from their previous function as mosques. There is also a strong Islamic influence to be noted in popular architectural styles.Vila Real de Santo António represents the region's very best example of the huge legacy left by the Marquês de Pombal as he set about rebuilding much of Portugal following the 1755 earthquake. Indeed, the entire architectural richness of this sun-blessed region derives from the multitude of references that may be encountered by those prepared to venture a little beyond the immediate beauty of the coastline.

Algarve's Culinary

Discovering the extent of the Algarve's culinary range is a pleasure for anyone visiting the region. Simultaneously rich in flavours but unpretentious in preparation, the Algarve cuisine reflects both roots set deep in realities long since gone and a diverse set of influences, as is the case with so much of this region's heritage.

In a land of fishermen residing on the fringes of the Atlantic, fish and shellfish have always played a leading role in the kitchen. In many cases, the best recipes are those of fishermen who, over the centuries, have perfected the best means of sealing in all the natural flavour - ever so slow charcoal grilling. But yet there is much more. There are many recipes in which the best of the sea's produce is cooked along with herbs, spices and other ingredients. The most famous is Clams cooked in the Cataplana, a copper utensil. Islamic in origin, the Cataplana is particularly effective in preserving delicate flavours.

However, the influences have come from all over. The inland region has also contributed to the Algarve cuisine with some wonderful recipes based on the local agriculture, wild herbs and plants, and the meats culled from the hillside pastureland.
Now internationally famous, the cakes and desserts are the sweetest of delights! There is no holding out against the divinely produced specialities featuring their lavish dash of sugar and eggs in addition to the almonds, figs, oranges or carobs grown across the Algarve.
And, to accompany all this, there is the famous distilled spirit known as "Aguardente de Medronho", many fruit liqueurs and some fine regional wines.
This is the richest of legacies and one well cared for at any one of the many restaurants or traditional tasquinhas dotted across the region.

Algarve - Habits and Customs

A diversity of wisdom

This region has always proved attractive to settlers who down the ages have come here from a wide variety of origins and cultures. This has led the modern Algarve to retain very special characteristics that run throughout its people's way of life. These special features are expressed in such distinct fields as Architecture (with the original chimneys standing out), Music or Gastronomy. Many such traditions have survived the ages and form a major attraction for visitors to the region. From the handicrafts, especially rich osier weaving and painted ceramics, to the very special way in which festivals are celebrated, you will find the rich heritage of a progressive region, which the local inhabitants take great pleasure in sharing with their visitors.
A particular attraction has proved to be the local music, heard throughout the region. From hotels to restaurants, from festivals to traditional celebrations, the typical Algarve dancing and singing celebrations, whose particular highlight is the "corridinho" folk dance, delight everybody with their infectious rhythm and pace.
As would naturally be expected, some of the Algarve's best traditions come directly from the sea. Take, for example, all the depth of the traditions to be found amongst the communities engaged in fishing and the gathering of shellfish.
Traditions that still convey their vibrancy to the delight of all visitors!
